Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi has officially declared his intention to run for Bungoma governor in 2027, marking an end to his political career in Nairobi and signaling a return to his roots.

Speaking on Sunday, July 13, 2025, during a visit to Kabuchai, Wanyonyi was met with thunderous applause after announcing his decision to shift focus from the capital to his home county.

The veteran legislator, who hails from Bungoma, told residents that he felt it was time to serve his own people after years of representing Westlands in Nairobi.

“You released me to Nairobi to serve the nation. I have completed that chapter and want to end my journey here at home,” said Wanyonyi, drawing a wave of cheers from the crowd.

When he asked whether they would welcome him back, Kabuchai residents responded by raising their hands and chanting in unison, signaling strong grassroots support for his bid.

Wanyonyi emphasized that, if elected, his administration would prioritize women’s empowerment, recognizing their vital role in society.

“My priority when I come to Bungoma will be women,” he added.

His announcement comes just days after eight of the nine elected MPs from Bungoma endorsed his gubernatorial bid, vowing to rally behind him as the preferred successor to outgoing Governor Kenneth Lusaka.

On July 2, Sirisia MP John Waluke, speaking in the local dialect, revealed that the Western MPs caucus had convened and agreed to back Wanyonyi's candidacy. The only absentee was Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, who is also eyeing the county’s top seat.

“As Bungoma leaders, we’ve resolved to protect the future of our county. Apart from Barasa, who has expressed personal interest, the rest of us are united in supporting Tim Wanyonyi,” said Waluke.

He further disclosed plans to convene a crucial meeting on Thursday next week, bringing together all 45 elected MCAs and their nominated counterparts at Wanyonyi’s home to consolidate political support and map the county’s future.

“Bungoma will not collapse under our watch,” Waluke declared, signaling a coordinated effort to build a strong front behind Wanyonyi’s bid.

Wanyonyi, known for his measured leadership and legislative experience, now enters the Bungoma gubernatorial race with both popular and political momentum on his side.
